Generation
3 is the most powerful, recognized night vision tube available.
Gallium arsenide, a sensitive chemical,
is added to the photocathode, resulting
in a brighter, high resolution image. An ion barrier film was also
added to increase tube life. Generation
3 night vision provides the user with good to excellent low light
performance.
3rd
Generation night vision was developed in the 1990's. However,
because gallium arsenide semiconductor
material used in third-generation photocathodes
and micro channel plates is very costly,
3rd
generation night vision devices are expensive.
